Vanguard VEO CITY CB29 NV Cross Body Camera Bag Review

Vanguard has updated its camera bag line-up with the introduction of a new VEO City Collection. Three sizes of the bag are available in a variety of colours, plus there are also Technical Packs for smaller cameras/smartphones and accessories. On test, we have the VEO CITY CB29 in Blue.

The Vanguard VEO City CB29 NV is a lightweight, 6-litre cross-body bag that sits in the middle of the VEO City range where there’s also a 3-litre and 8-litre size available. 

It can be difficult to grasp how much capacity a bag has when talking in litres so in a practical sense, there’s room for a mirrorless or small DSLR camera, 1-2 lenses (up to 24-70mm f/2.8) and accessories. If you prefer, it can be set up to carry a small drone and there are straps to hold a travel tripod or other small support. There are multiple pockets and an adjustable organiser keeps cables and other accessories tidy. For charging on the go, there’s a cable slot and you can also carry an 8″ tablet. 

The bag can be carried via a handle or removable strap when travelling further.

Vanguard VEO CITY CB29 NV Handling & Performance

When first picking the VEO City CB29 NV up, it was easy to see that quality was at the forefront of the design with a stylish, modern look and contrasting leather features. Vanguard says it’s constructed from ‘Air Textured Yarn’ which is used to create nylon that’s abrasion resistant and zippers are waterproof. You also get a rain cover should it really start to pour while you’re out. 

It really is a lovely-looking bag that reminds us of the rather expensive Billingham bags without the steep price tag. The leather zipper, handle, strap accents and Vanguard symbol add a feeling of luxury while the overall construction and strong material choice reassure you that your kit is safe. The zip is well constructed and water certainly won’t get in while the leather grab handle is strong and allows you to grasp the bag firmly. A shoulder strap is provided that is easily fitted to the bag so you can sling it over a shoulder when travelling, commuting or on a city shoot. The strap is comfortable and features a rubberised back to stop it slipping off of your shoulder.

On the back is a pocket for travel documents you may need quick access to and on the base are straps you can secure a small tripod to. 

Unzip the VEO City CB29 NV and you’ll find room for a mirrorless or small DSLR camera and 1-2 lenses (up to 24-70mm f/2.8) which can be organised to suit you with the three adjustable smart dividers. Kit fits snugly and the soft dividers hold your equipment securely in place without scratching surfaces. You also find a compartment for an 8″ tablet and a wide range of pockets, slots and other clever storage solutions are built in to keep accessories and cables tidy. 

If you want to charge a smartphone on the go but still use it to access maps or guides, there’s a cable slot so you can feed a charging cable out of your bag, to your smartphone, from a battery pack you’re carrying inside the bag. 

There’s literally room for everything you’d need for a day of shooting without the bag shouting ‘I’m carrying loads of expensive equipment’ and it’ll fit under a plane seat, too, for times when space is at a premium in overhead storage. We like the VEO City CB29 NV a lot, it’s a very cool camera bag. 

Value For Money

The VEO City CB29 NV is priced at £109.99 and is available now on the Vanguard website. This puts it on par with other camera bags of this size/style or even slightly cheaper in some cases. For example, the Peak Design Everyday Sling 6L V2 is priced at £114 and Tenba Messengers are around £115 but are nowhere near as attractive as the VEO City range. A similar-sized Billingham will cost you around £187 to over £200.
