Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II Lens Announced – Take A Look At Sample Photos

‘Evolution and Added Value’ are the mission statement for the new Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 OSS II lens. It is 9 years since the first 70-200mm G lens and this Mk II version adds improved performance and new versatility.

Sony is offering a new and upgraded optic for full-frame that is faster in operation, lighter, better quality and able to focus right down to a magnification of 1:2, or half-life size. Used with the Sony 2x converter SEL20TC this magnification becomes 1:1, or life-size, a true macro lens and a hugely significant bonus.

As of April 2023, there are now 72 Sony mirrorless lenses, the new lens bringing the total to 73. 23 of these are APS-C format, and 50 are full frame.

Target uses for the new lens include Nature, Travel, Sports, Wildlife, Macro, landscapes and Portraits.

• 19 elements in 13 groups, including 1 Aspheric, 3 ED (Extra Low Dispersion), 1 AA (Advanced Aspheric), 1 Super ED and a floating focusing structure that maintains performance even at close distances
• Parfocal design (maintains focus when zoomed)
• Fluorine coating for the front element – repels dust, grease and moisture
• Dust and moisture-resistant construction
• Minimum focus 0.26m – 0.42m
• Magnification at all focal lengths 0.5x (1:2)
• Magnification with 2x teleconverter 1x (1:1), focal length range becomes 140-400mm
• Compatible with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters
• Weight 794g and measuring 149mm x 82.2mm
• Diaphragm has 9 blades and a circular aperture to enhance bokeh
• 4 XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors making AF 20% faster than the previous model
• Elements are arranged in two floating groups to maintain sharpness at all distances
• Internal focusing does not extend length of lens, but zooming does
• No blackout feature with Alpha 1 camera supported up to 30fps
• AF tracking whilst zooming
