Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Handling

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G

When it comes to the overall design, there’s nothing wrong with the Galaxy A54 5G, it just doesn’t ‘wow’ us. It definitely doesn’t feel as premium as a flagship smartphone with it having a plastic frame but there is Gorilla Glass front and back so still feels well made; just without the luxury touch. You do get an IP67 water/dust resistant rating which is unusual at this price point and a wide variety of colour options are available.

On the front is a 6.4-inch display which is sharp, bright and offers excellent colour reproduction. There’s a small screen bezel and the front camera is cut out of the display. On the sides are the volume and power controls and on the bottom of the smartphone you find the USB-C port. Turn the smartphone over and three large camera lenses can be seen which do protrude quite a bit so the phone doesn’t sit flush when on a table. In the hand, the Galaxy A54 5G fits well and is comfortable to hold.

The rear triple camera system lines up as a 50MP f/1.8 (wide), 12MP f/2.2 (ultrawide) and 5MP f/2.4 (macro) with the wide camera featuring Phase Detection Auto Focus and Optical Image Stabilisation. Selfies are captured with a 32MP f/2.2 camera positioned top-centre of the screen.

Plenty of shooting modes such as panorama, portrait, night and food are built in but there’s no RAW shooting, even in the Pro app.

Camera Specs:

  • 50MP f/1.8 (wide) with PDAF and OIS
  • 12MP f/2.2 (ultrawide)
  • 5MP f/2.4 (macro)
  • 32MP f/2.2 (wide) selfie camera
  • Various creative modes such as Night and Portrait

Battery life –  There’s a 5000mAh battery built-in which is good for the price point and it easily lasts a day before you need to reach for the charging cable (there’s no wireless charging).

[SECTION]PERFORMANCE[/SECTION]

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Performance

The performance section is where we look at the image quality performance of the camera. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Sample Photos

Sample Photos – Most of the time, results are impressive with even dynamic range and good colour reproduction but on occasion, the smartphone’s AI gets a little bit excited and over-saturates greens and blues. Some won’t mind the look as it’s very much like a digital filter but the look won’t be for everyone. Portrait mode does a great job of introducing bokeh, too.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Lens test images

Lens Performance – You get up to 10X digital zoom built in but that doesn’t mean you should use it as results are pretty poor. You lose quality at 4x with purple fringing creeping in but it’s still a useable image. 2X zoom produces decent results but the best images are captured with the 1X zoom. The ultra-wide shot is also good but not quite as sharp as the images captured at 1X. The overcooking of greens and blues is also very noticeable when capturing the same scene at different zoom lengths.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Digital filters

Digital Filters – A decent range of digital filters are built in which you can apply live to the scene in front of you. Everything from vintage looks to black and white are available.

Panorama

Panoramas – Panoramas are well stiched with good colour reproduction and good dynamic range.

Video – Video is captured in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60 fps and 720p at 480fps. Stabilisation is built in but limited to 1080p so you need a steady hand when shooting 4K or you can pop the smartphone on a support. Having said that, the footage captured is steady with good colour reproduction.

Value For Money

The [AMUK]Samsung Galaxy A54 5G|Samsung+Galaxy+smartphone[/AMUK] is priced at £441 on Amazon UK which is a rather decent sum for a smartphone nowadays. The flagship [AMUK]Galaxy S23|Samsung+Galaxy+smartphone[/AMUK], in comparison, is priced at around £782 so it’s a big saving in terms of cash alone. Obviously, the specs aren’t on-par but if money is your main concern, it’s worth noting the price difference. Alternatives from other brands include the Google Pixel 6a, [AMUK]iPhone SE 2022|Apple+iPhone[/AMUK] and older iPhones such as the [AMUK]iPhone 12|Apple+iPhone[/AMUK].

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G impressed us with its price and then with its performance. It doesn’t feel quite as premium as a flagship device but it does have a great display and a really decent battery. You also get a water-resistance rating which you don’t always find on less expensive smartphones. There’s a good line-up of cameras and most of the images captured are great but on occasion, the AI over-saturated blues and greens which won’t be to everyone’s liking.

Overall, we’re happy to recommend the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Pros

  • Image quality is good
  • Fantastic display
  • Water-resistant
  • Good battery

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Cons

  • Some of the auto-processing on images can be a bit heavy
  • Design is less premium
