A monpod is a great tool to have at your disposal as you can quickly grab it when you need a support for capturing a photo in your garden and its compact size means it’s also great for trips and holidays. Plus, you might visit a museum or garden where tripods aren’t allowed, or there’s simply not enough space to set one up, so you might get away with using a monopod instead. With this in mind, we’re putting the Novo Mantis MP100 Carbon Fibre Monopod to the test to find out if it’s a support we’ll be adding to our photography kit list.

Novo Mantis MP100 Carbon Fibre Monopod Features

The Novo Mantis MP100 is a 4-section monopod built from Carbon Fibre so it’s lightweight (520g) but can still hold a payload of up to 20 kg. It’s extendable to 1.8m and you use twist locks to release each section to extend it to the maximum height. When not in use, the NOVO Mantis MP100 measures 56.5cm.

There’s a rubberised grip, Dual 1/4″ and 3/8″ thread and the rubber feet can be removed to reveal spikes. If you want to unscrew the spikes to replace them or attach a different base, there’s a 3/8″ female threaded hole. You also get a soft bag to carry the monopod in, a 5-year warranty and a detachable wrist strap.

Novo Mantis MP100 Carbon Fibre Monopod Handling & Performance

The main features you want from a monopod are compactness for travelling, a good height when in use, easy-to-extend leg sections and sturdy support and we are happy to report that the Novo Mantis MP100 ticks all of these boxes.

As soon as you get it out of the carry bag, which could be slightly better quality we must admit, you can feel the quality of the build and the use of Carbon Fibre means it’s not cool to the touch. In slightly chilly weather, there’s a branded rubber grip you can hold for comfort and the 4-sections easily extend thanks to the large twist locks which are really grippy. There’s no slipage either as the locks secure really well.

From base to top plate, the Novo Mantis MP100 stands at 1.8m tall which is probably more height than most need but it is sturdy in use, even when you put a slightly heavier camera on it. The max payload is 20 kg which is a lot more than most will need and the monopod is compatible with a variety of photo and video heads. When in use, you can pop the wrist strap on for added stability/security but it’s also detachable should you not need it.

Folded, the Novo Mantis MP100 measures 56.5cm which isn’t the smallest support we’ve reviewed when not in use but by no means is it impractical and it will easily fit onto a backpack or in a case when packing for a holiday.

The inclusion of spiked feet as well as rubber ones means you can use the monopod on varying terrain or you can remove the feet altogether to attach other bases (Novo suggests the MVS-02 video stand as an example).

Overall, the Novo Mantis MP100 is a modern-looking and practical monopod that does exactly what it’s designed to.

Value For Money

The Novo Mantis MP100 is priced at £99.90 which is a bit of a bargain and very affordable. It sits in the same price range, if a little less expensive, than other monopods available too.
