[SECTION]INTRODUCTION[/SECTION]

Honor 90 Lite

The Honor 90 Lite lines itself up to be an interesting, and affordable alternative, to other entry-level priced smartphones but when put to the test, does it stand out in what is a very competitive market?

Honor 90 Lite Features

The Honor 90 Lite is a mid-range smartphone that features a 100MP wide camera that’s supported by a 5MP Ultrawide and 2MP Macro lens while on the front is a 16MP cutout camera. All of the expected camera modes are built in such as Portrait mode and Panorama and video shoots in 1080p. The Honor 90 Lite comes with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM which is impressive and you get a 4500mAh battery to power you through your day. The display measures a decent 6.7 inches and the phone isn’t too heavy at 179g. It also measures about average for modern smartphones.

Honor 90 Lite Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 100MP f/1.9 wide with PDAF, 5MP f/2.2 ultrawide, 2MP f/2.4 macro
  • Front Camera: 16MP f/2.5
  • Video: 1080p @ 30fps
  • Display: 6.7 inches (1080×2388)
  • Dimensions: 162.9 x 74.5 x 7.5mm
  • Weight: 179g
  • Storage and Memory: 256GB and 8GB RAM
  • Battery: 4500mAh

Honor 90 Lite Handling

Honor 90 Lite

The Honor 90 Lite doesn’t have the weight of some other smartphones making it feel less expensive but it still looks modern and appealing. Flat sides are easy to grip and buttons fall right under your fingertips but it does feel very plasticky when you’re holding it. You do get very thin bezels, though, allowing the display to really stand out. Size-wise, it’s a big-ish phone but it doesn’t feel too big when holding and navigating apps etc. It’s light, too, weighing in at just 179g.

Turn the smartphone over and you get to see the full shimmery back reflecting light in a really cool way. On test is the silver version and the colours created from the diffusion of light are very mermaid-like and make the phone’s back look like it’s built from something other than plastic. Some might think it’s a little loud but we actually like it. The frame is matt and doesn’t feature the same reflective qualities but it is home to all of the ports, buttons and other features you expect to find on a smartphone. There’s no headphone jack, though, which is something you still find on some mid-range smartphones.

Honor 90 Lite

Switch the Honor 90 Lite on and you can really appreciate the display which is bright, sharp and everything you need from a phone screen. As mentioned, the thin bezels really help but there is a slight chin so for those who like symmetry, the added space at the bottom could be annoying. A pre-fitted screen protector is featured but you don’t get a phone case or charger supplied in the box, another cost-cutting exercise probably that will keep the overall price of the smartphone down.

The rear camera module is an interesting shape but it does protrude quite a bit so the phone rocks when using it on a flat surface. The rear cameras consist of a 100MP f/1.9 wide with PDAF, 5MP f/2.2 ultrawide and a 2MP f/2.4 macro. There’s also a 2MP depth sensor. On the front is a 16MP camera that’s cut out at the top of the display and like the rear camera, will capture 1080p video.

Open the camera app and it’s very much self-explanatory with various modes built-in and up to 10x digital zoom. You can access from ultra-wide to 2x by using circular buttons but for anything after 2x you have to pinch-zoom the screen. AI will help boost colours by recognizing scenes and there are various filters built-in along with beauty and bokeh effects. Should you want more control, there’s a Pro mode.

Camera Specs:

  • Rear Camera: 100MP f/1.9 wide with PDAF, 5MP f/2.2 ultrawide, 2MP f/2.4 macro
  • Front Camera: 16MP f/2.5
  • Video: 1080p @ 30fps
  • Various photo modes
  • Digital filters
  • Pro Mode
  • Beauty effects
  • Bokeh slider

Battery life –  A 4500mAh battery is built in and we didn’t have to reach for a charger once during a day of testing. There’s no wireless charging and you have to buy an adapter separately.

[SECTION]PERFORMANCE[/SECTION]

Honor 90 Lite Performance

The performance section is where we look at the image quality performance of the camera. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Honor 90 Lite Sample Photos

Sample Photos – The main camera does a decent job at capturing scenes that are true to life without turning greens and blues toxic and it does rather well when the dynamic range is wide, too. Lower light levels can be a little harder for the camera, especially as there’s no OIS, but even the indoor shots are sharp, have great colour and are well-balanced. Some might not like the overall look of the images as they are very natural but it’s refreshing to see when so many now like to produce shots that don’t reflect reality. Images captured with the ultra-wide aren’t quite as impressive but are still very much usable.

Honor 90 Lite Lens test images

Lens Performance – As mentioned, the main wide-angle camera produces the best results with accurate colours, good dynamic range and sharpness. The ultra-wide produces usable images but they lack clarity and are a little washed out in places. Switch to 2X and detail softens quite a bit. Anything after 2X we’d avoid using as your images will turn into oil paintings.

Honor 90 Lite Digital filters

Digital Filters – You don’t get as many filters as we’ve seen on other smartphones but you do have access to enough to have a bit of fun with your shots, adding vintage looks or mono tones.

Panoramic Shot

Panoramas – Panoramas are easy to capture and stitch well but they lack some oomph, looking washed out.

Video – Video is captured at 1080p, not 4K, at 30fps. Quality is fine but nothing overly impressive and the same can be said for the digital stabilisation as the footage is rather shakey.

Honor 90 Lite Verdict

With the Honor 90 Lite, you get a smartphone that looks good and offers good specs at a really great price. When it comes to affordable smartphones, there will always be some cost-saving exercises and omitting features such as 4K video and wireless charging from the Honor 90 Lite seem to be the way Honor has brought this phone in at closer to £200. The supporting cameras don’t perform quite as well as the main shooter either but they’re not terrible by any means. Overall, if you don’t want to spend too much money on a smartphone the Honor 90 Lite is certainly worth looking at as it’s definitely a mid-range winner in our eyes.

Honor 90 Lite Pros

  • Main camera produces good photos
  • Decent display
  • Great battery
  • Amazing storage spec

Honor 90 Lite Cons

  • Poor Zoom
  • No 4K video
  • Secondary cameras could be better
