FUJIFILM Corporation (President & CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) has announced the FUJINON GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR (GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR) lens, due for release in June 2024. The new lens joins the line-up of interchangeable FUJIFILM GF lenses for the GFX Series of mirrorless digital cameras equipped with a large-format sensor measuring approximately 1.7 times that of a 35mm full-frame sensor.
The FUJIFILM GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR is a super telephoto prime lens that can capture images at up to 500mm (equivalent to 396mm in 35mm format), making it the longest in the GF lens series.
When combined with the FUJINON Teleconverter GF1.4X TC WR (available separately), which expands the lens’ focal length, it achieves a maximum focal length of 700mm (equivalent to 554mm in 35mm format). Despite being a super telephoto lens, it weighs approximately 1,375g and offers excellent portability.

A combination of the powerful telephoto performance of the GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR with the high resolution of the GFX camera series results in the extremely precise reproduction of fine details. The lens can accurately capture the sweat flying from athletes during decisive sports moments, the wrinkles on the skin of wild animals, and the individual feathers of birds – delivering a level of realism and detail that cannot be perceived with the naked eye.
By miniaturising a typically large and heavy super telephoto lens and achieving high-speed and high-precision autofocus, the GFX Series enables super telephoto photography in sports, wildlife and bird photography, where portability and mobility are an advantage.
Furthermore, with improved image stabilisation sensing accuracy and optimal mechanical design, it achieves powerful image stabilisation with up to 6.0 stops4 of compensation. Photographers can comfortably shoot handheld in the challenging super telephoto range, where camera shake is most likely to occur.
PRODUCT FEATURES
Longest telephoto prime lens in the FUJIFILM GF lens line-up
- Equipped with a focal length of 500mm (equivalent to 396mm in 35mm format), making it the longest in the history of GF lenses and excelling in sports, wildlife and bird photography.
- Combined with the FUJINON Teleconverter GF1.4X TC WR (available separately), it achieves a maximum focal length equivalent to 700mm (equivalent to 554mm in 35mm format).
- Luxurious lens construction of 14 groups and 21 elements, including two Super ED lenses and five ED lenses, effectively suppresses chromatic aberration specific to super telephoto lenses, and achieves high resolution performance. This lens accurately captures the level of detail beyond the capabilities of the naked eye, unique to super telephoto lenses.
A combination of lightweight design and rugged durability, suitable for prolonged shooting in the field
- Constructed with redesigned, extremely lightweight components, the lens weighs approximately 1,375g – much lower than conventional large-format telephoto lenses. In addition to its lightweight form factor, the optimal arrangement of ED lenses and Super ED lenses minimises chromatic aberration, which is often associated with miniaturisation, enabling high-resolution performance.
- Despite being a telephoto lens with a larger front element, the GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR achieves a comfortable grip without feeling the weight of the front by optimising the lens placement.
- The lens features a weather resistant, and -10°C low-temperature resistant structure, with sealing at 18 points on the lens barrel. Furthermore, the front element of the lens is coated with fluorine, providing water-repellent and anti-smudge properties. It can be used with full peace of mind for prolonged shooting in adverse weather conditions.
Powerful 6.0-stop image stabilisation performance
- By improving the sensing accuracy of camera shake and implementing optimal mechanism design, this outstanding lens achieves a powerful 6.0-stop image stabilization performance. Photographers can comfortably enjoy handheld shooting in the challenging super telephoto range, where camera shake is more likely to occur.
Fast and accurate autofocus with comfortable operation
- While maintaining high-resolution performance, the lens is equipped with an internal focus system that incorporates a smaller and lighter focus lens and drives the focus group using a linear motor. This enables a fast and silent autofocus (AF) with a minimum delay of approximately 0.31 seconds. Even in super telephoto shooting, where precise focusing is required, users can quickly and accurately capture their subject without missing the decisive moment.
- The Focus Preset function enables the focus to be shifted to a location pre-defined with the Focus Preset button. This reduces the user’s operation workload as they do not need to re-adjust focus on a targeted subject.
- The lens features a Focus Limiter, allowing users to restrict the lens’ AF range. This can effectively shorten AF time when photographing a subject that is five metres away or more.
- The Focus Control button is located at the front edge of the lens barrel. Photographers can press this button to instantly recall a function assigned with the Focus Selector for smooth AF operation.
