Aftershoot Launches A New Culling Mode

In the world of photography post-production, one name consistently stands out as a beacon of support, innovation, and commitment to photographers’ needs: Aftershoot

As an AI-powered culling and editing software created by photographers, for photographers, Aftershoot makes the photography workflow smoother and more efficient.

However, not everyone prefers to let AI cull their images because of the subjectivity involved in culling.

The art of culling involves meticulously selecting the best shots from a sea of images, and it can be a deeply personal aspect of a photographer’s craft.

Many photographers grapple with the idea of letting artificial intelligence take the reins in this critical stage of post-production.

This leaves photographers divided into two distinct camps: the staunch advocates of manual culling as an art form and those who embrace AI culling as a huge time saver.

Aftershoot is bridging this divide with their highly-anticipated new feature that gives photographers extreme culling control while still speeding up their workflows with some AI assistance.

Introducing AI-Assisted Culling For Total Culling Control

Aftershoot has introduced a new way to cull called “AI-Assisted Culling” alongside their “AI-automated Culling” method.

That means users can now choose from two culling types:

  • Automated AI Culling
  • AI-Assisted Culling

Automated AI Culling

Automated AI Culling is where Aftershoot’s AI culls for you, picking the best photos based on your preferences.

AI-Assisted Culling allows you to make selections yourself with some AI assistance.

It helps you speed up the selection process by:

  • Grouping duplicate photos so you can choose the best ones more easily.
  • Letting you inspect photos up close with the Key Faces feature.
  • Assigning Image Scores based on their quality, helping you rate them more easily and quickly.

Key Faces panel

In the Key Faces panel, you can use a slider to adjust the size of the key face thumbnails.

The key faces algorithm sorts key faces in order of Sharpest to Most Blur

When using AI-Assisted Culling, Aftershoot will group duplicate images, but it won’t make selections based on stars or colors and it won’t sort images into “blur” or “closed eyes” categories (which it will do when you use Automated AI Cull).

Instead, you’ll receive Image Scores

Image Scores Reflect the Quality of Your Images

You can use Image Scores to help you decide which images you want to keep.

Essentially, these scores give you some AI-assisted feedback on the quality of an image while still keeping the control of rating your images in your hands.

These are the two Image Scores you’ll see:

  1. Blur Score
  2. Closed Eyes Score

Every score has three states. They are as follows:

Blur Score

Good: The highest rating, implying the image is sharp
Soft: A medium rating, implying that you may want to review the image
Blur: The lowest score that Aftershoot believes is technically blurry

Closed Eyes Score

Open: Eyes are fully open
Partial: Eyes are only partially open
Closed: Eyes are closed

Image Scores

You can turn the Image Scores on/off by clicking on the new score icon or by using the keyboard shortcut, Q.

The Aftershoot Culling Workflow

It’s great that Aftershoot gives you two culling methods, but how does the actual culling workflow in Aftershoot work?

Here’s a quick rundown of the four-step process:

  1. Have the folder of JPEG or RAW images you want to cull ready. Create a new album in Aftershoot and drag and drop your images into it. Aftershoot will start importing your images, but you can proceed to the next step while that’s happening.
  2. Click “Start Culling” and you’ll see a pop-up where you must select your culling type (Automated AI Culling or AI-Assisted Culling) and set your culling preferences.
  3. Once you’ve customized your culling settings, click “Start Culling” and let Aftershoot work its magic (or start your manual cull if you opted for AI-Assisted Culling).
  4. View and change your selections as needed, then click “Save Changes” and after that, “Export Changes.” Aftershoot will prompt you to choose where you’d like to export your selections to: either Lightroom, Capture One, or a folder of your choice.
