Mylio Photos+ (and Mylio Photos) has had an update bringing new features/tools and improvements to what is already a comprehensive photo management tool. As we’ve already taken a look at Mylio Photos+, awarding it a ‘Highly Recommended’ accolade, this review will just look at the new features announced in update 24.0. To see a more detailed review of the software, click here. There’s a free version of the photo management tool available (Mylio Photos) but we’re reviewing the subscription option, Mylio Photo+.
Mylio Photos+ Features
Mylio Photos+ is a digital asset management tool you can use to organise, protect and share your photos, videos and other digital assets so it’s easier to find a specific file when needed.
Version 24 of Mylio Photos+ was introduced with the following core values in mind:
- Protect important memories
- Privacy as a priority
- Intentional innovation
- Listen to customer input
- Promote and follow standards
- Create a safe community
The team behind the software have also focused on making tasks you’ll do every day, such as organising and sharing images, much easier and in the company’s own words ‘more robust’.
Mylio says that there are over 100 new features/ performance improvements which would take us rather a long time to look at in detail so instead, we’re looking at the main updates/improvements Mylio has discussed.
To improve organisation, improvements have been made to Spaces which you can use to categorise images, Search has been improved, and guided imports help new users create one library from many sources. Other new features include the ability to use family metadata, Mylio Drive (private storage space), Shared Albums and several more storage options have been added. There’s a new Tools Menu and you can adjust settings on other devices signed into your Mylip Photos+ account via a remote control option.
Other improvements that aren’t as big as the ones above but are still useful include:
- Tap to Sync is on by default – Tap to Sync allows you to easily adjust the Sync Policy for Folders to override the Sync Policy on a specific device.
- Find Events – You can type in an event name and filter the view of your calendar to make things easier to find.
- PSD/PSB Files as Photos – Photoshop documents are now classified as photos.
- Proposed Faces Switch – You can now choose in People View if you want to see specific types of faces.
- Confirm to Duplicate – If you get your keyboard shortcuts messed up and accidentally try to duplicate several files, Mylio Photos will ask for confirmation.
- Move Link and Invert Buttons for QuickFilters – These are now found on the left side of the bar to make them easier to use.
- New Item Buttons – Clearer buttons for creating new containers.
- Add Notes to People – An option to write info on specific people.
- Categorise Item – Assign categories to selected items.
- New Album Fields – You can now set the Author to credit the photos and a Description of the contents of the album.
- New Languages – Mylio Photos is now available in Norwegian, Swedish and Ukrainian.
Mylio Photos+ Use & Performance
Mylio Photos+ wants to make it as easy as possible to organise and view images so with the 24.0 release, Spaces has been introduced so you can sort/organise your digital files into subject-specific viewing options. The Spaces available include Public, Personal, Family, Work, Guest, Private and Everything. There are also options for customising a Space. You can also add a PIN code to these Spaces to prevent the sharing or deleting of files. We think Spaces create a much less cluttered workspace and help streamline the organisation process so they’re a welcomed addition in our eyes. Plus, it makes it really easy to share specific photos. To help organise your new Spaces, there’s also a ‘Tap to categorise’ option so you can add one of the default workspaces to an album or folder.
Another way you can share photos with a specific group of people is with the new ‘Shared Albums’ function. This option allows you to create what is essentially a web gallery of images that you can customise. It’s a great tool for those who want to send albums for download or in circumstances where you want people to proof your photos.
To make image organisation even easier, Mylio Photos+ uses a Dynamic Search function that learns what you regularly search for so it can create custom indexes. What this does, with some clever analysis, is speed up the search process so you’ll be able to find specific images even faster. The search function wasn’t particularly slow before the new update but anything developers can do to speed processes up is welcomed.
Metadata is another tool photographers use for organising and categorising images and with the Mylio Photos+ update, you can now use Family History metadata to aid with search. This new metadata option uses industry-standard tags set by the Family History Metadata Working Group and can be read by most genealogical and family history websites. This does seem rather specific and we can’t see everyone getting excited about this feature but family historians and those interested in family trees will find it a useful update.
To get your images into Mylio Photos+ you have to upload them and the Mylio team has introduced a really smart way to import images from many sources at once. Instead of having the delve through many folders to reach the images you want to import, you can use the Guided Import option to add pictures from a specific folder, social media account, Android device or memory card with just a click of a button. Again. adding images to Mylio Photos+ prior to the new release wasn’t a hard process but all of these small changes to speed and ease do add up which means you won’t have to be sat in front of your screen for quite as long.
Once images are uploaded, you’ll get access to the Mylio Drive which is a personal and private storage space where an entire copy of your photo library is stored, free of charge, for easy access. These images are optimised to take up less space but still retain full RAW editing capabilities and all metadata. This is an optional feature you have to enable but by doing so you can sync optimised images on the go much faster and access images even when devices are offline. If you were wondering, the Mylio team can’t see this content and you must be signed in to access it. Unlimited storage isn’t something you see offered for free from all photo management systems, or indeed photo editing software, so it’s a pretty cool feature to have access to.
Those using iOS devices can also connect an external drive to their iPad or iPhone to backup/store images and when you have multiple devices, such as a Mac and iPhone, logged into your Mylio Photos+ account, you can now adjust the settings in Mylio Photos+ on each of the devices connected. It’s not something we found we needed to do but those who want to manage core settings may find it’s something they take a closer look at. However, an option that more users will find useful is the option to automatically back up images to a portable hard drive or SSD.
The final big change to Mylio Photos+ is the addition of a new tools menu that’s found in the left sidebar. From any view, you can now access a tool for organising photos of people (Batch Face Tagging), remove duplicate images quickly (Photo DeDupe) and search for similar photos so they can be removed (Photo DeCluter). It’s a change that aids with workflow speed and once again means you’ll have to spend less time in front of your computer.
Add to these the bullet-pointed list of useful new/improved features found above and you have a comprehensive photo management tool that’s easy to navigate, quick to use and even more intuitive. Plus, the Mylio Photos team say they are already working on the next update that will focus on improving usability and performance even further which is great to hear as it shows their commitment to ensuring Mylio Photos+ is a great photo management tool.
Value For Money
Mylio Photos+ is priced at $9.99 per month (plus applicable taxes) which isn’t too expensive but not everyone is a fan of pay-monthly options so there’s also an option to pay $99.99 for the year. There is a free version available but the tools on offer are more limited and you don’t get access to multiple devices. Mylio Photos users have the option to trial Mylio Photos+ absolutely free for 30 days.
Mylio Photos+ Verdict
In a time when we all have multiple digital files on various devices, Mylio Photos+ really does get us organised. We liked it when we first took a look at the photo management tool back in July and the 24.0 release further cements our view that Mylio Photos+ will give you all of the tools and features you need to bring order to a messy collection of digital files and photos.
