Monopods are a great accessory that offers solid support while allowing photographers the freedom to move around a bit more easily. They’re also easy to transport and can be considerably less money than a tripod. However, when it comes to tilting, to photograph something above or below you, things can get a bit tricky and that’s when a monopod head comes in useful. They also make panning a lot easier, too.

Various monopod head styles are available but on test is a 2-way pan/tilt head from (Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head) which we’ve been using on the Novo Mantis MP100 Carbon Fibre Monopod that reviewed an ‘Editor’s Choice’ award from us.

Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head Features

The Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head is a two-way head which means you get a built-in panoramic function so the head can turn as well as tilt. It has a maximum payload of 5KG and is made from aluminium with a two-tone finish.

The tilt range of the monopod goes from +90 degrees to -65 degrees and full 360-degree panning is available with graticule markings available for fine adjustments. You also get a removable padded handle to aid with panning.

Weight-wise, it comes in at 440g and is ideal for a range of mirrorless cameras, DSLRs and even spotting scopes which are attached to the head via a standard 1/4″-20 camera screw plate. The head itself is attached to a monopod via a 3/8″-16 tripod socket and a 1/4″ can be used with the addition of the provided adapter.

  • Two-way head for tilting and panoramic capture

  • Arca-Swiss compatible
  • 3/8″ or 1/4″ base mounting
  • 5kg max payload

Novo Mantis MP100 Carbon Fibre Monopod Handling & Performance

As this monopod head is a 2-way head, it can tilt up/down but it also has a rotating base on it which means it can be used for panning as well. If you’re just capturing still images, you won’t necessarily need a monopod head that can pan but for those who capture video or shoot action sport/wildlife quite a bit, having a head that can pan while on a monopod can be really useful.

You adjust the tilt/pan of the Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head via knobs that are easy to grip, turn and tighten/untighten. They’re comfortable to use and feel incredibly well made. As for the tilting and panning action, it’s smooth and easy to control (even more so when you use the removable padded handle which is also easy to secure in place and is a great addition to the head).

You can use the standard Arca-Swiss compatible 34mm plate to attach your camera to or you can use different length plates/camera K brackets if you prefer which can be secure directly to the head. It’s easier to attach the plate to your camera and then attach that to the monopod rather than trying to spin your camera onto the plate when it’s secured in place on the monopod already. There’s a standard 1/4″-20 camera screw on the plate and 3/8″-16 tripod socket on the base.

The Novo MPH10 is light so doesn’t add too much weight to a monopod when carrying and with a payload of 5kg, it easily supported the mirrorless camera we secured to it.

Construction is from aluminium and it has a two-tone anodised finish so it looks stylish and modern. In fact, it looks great on the Novo Mantis MP100 Carbon Fibre Monopod that we have also reviewed.

Value For Money

The Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head is priced at £149.50 and is available now. Some might find it a bit expensive but the quality of the build and its performance in use make it a worthwhile investment and is of a similar price to other 2-way heads available of this quality.

Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head Verdict

The Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head does exactly what it’s designed to do and it does it well. It’s easy to use, is incredibly well made and the addition of the handle makes capturing panning shots a doddle. If you’re a photographer who needs to pan/tilt your monopod and want to make the process easier, the Novo MPH-10 Pro Monopod Head could be just what you are looking for.
