Novo Helix T200 Carbon Fibre Tripod Kit Handling & Performance
As soon as you take the Novo Helix T200 out of its supplied carry bag, you can feel it’s incredibly well-made. Construction is excellent and as well as offering strength/stability, the ‘superweave’ carbon fibre looks really cool. The T200 offers a payload of 20KG which is plenty for most camera/lens combos and it has a maximum working height of 1870mm (with the BHP-40 ball head attached) which is more than enough height. Folded, it’s not the most compact tripod we’ve seen but at 520mm, it’s not bad and will easily fit into tripod backpack straps. For storage or short distances, you can use the supplied padded carry case which is well-made but could do with a shoulder strap. Having said that, the tripod and head together only weigh 2.3KG so they’re not too heavy to carry.
The legs expand via four sections with rubber twist locks releasing each section. You can get a good grip on the rubberised locks which are easy to turn and tighten. The legs can be adjusted to 3 angles (23, 50 and 85 degrees) via locking angle switches found at the top of the legs which, combined with a reversible centre column, allows for low-ground working. The legs also feature one-piece leg-captured shims which should stop you from losing any shims when cleaning the tripod legs after a day at the beach.
For windy days, there’s a hook at the base of the centre column you can hang extra weight from for stability (but the tripod is actually really secure without this) and you can screw off the rubber feet, replacing them with spikes should you need a more secure base on soft ground.
Another handy feature is the detachable leg which can be used as a monopod so you’re essentially getting two supports in one. This can be extended to 1825mm with the head attached which is almost 6 feet.
The kit comes with the BHP-40 ball head but other heads can be attached to the base plate via the standard 3/8″ and 1/4″ reversible screw thread. You also get a short centre-column adapter.
The supplied BHP-40 ball head is just as well made as the tripod itself feeling strong, robust and well-crafted. It comes in its own pouch which we think is a nice touch, too. The BHP-40 ball head is made from aluminium and has a black/silver finish which compliments the design of the Helix T200 really well. It comes with a 50mm Arca-Swiss compatible plate that’s rubberised for extra grip and it has its own safety lock. The ballhead itself is controlled via a large lock knob that has its own tension/drag control. It’s a really grippy control that’s easy to adjust. As for the ball mechanism. it’s smooth and allows for precise adjustments. If you regularly capture panoramas, a panoramic control is built in at the base of the head.
Overall, the Novo Helix T200 Carbon Fibre Tripod Kit is durable, strong and looks great.
